Mason's Holiday Lighted Parade Turns 25. Here's How the Night Actually Works.

"Parade registrants that DO NOT have lights will not be allowed to line up and participate in the parade."

That line is from the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce's listing for the 25th Mason Holiday Lighted Parade, and it explains a lot about the night of Friday, November 27. The Chamber's participant rules set the parade's shape, capping it in size, lighting it from end to end and keeping it short enough to fit between the tree lighting and dinner. In 2026, it also reaches a downtown that has more reasons to stay out once the last unit goes by.

Forty units, and every one of them lit

Mason's parade isn't open to anyone who shows up. Units have to register, and the Chamber takes only the first 40 that sign up. Entry is free. Taken together, the participant rules on the listing decide what you'll see from the curb:

  • Lights are required. Every unit, walker and participant has to be lit. The Chamber says this is for spectators' enjoyment and for safety. It also tells entrants to "get your generator or inverter humming and use as many lights as you can."
  • No live Santas. The listing says it plainly, with an exclamation point.
  • No throwing candy. This one is a police order. Nothing gets tossed from a parade unit, and no one gets on or off a unit while the parade is moving.
  • Walkers can come to you. Only people on foot may walk to the sidelines to hand out candy or other items.

So the parade has a ceiling on length, a floor on brightness, and a single way for candy to reach the curb: by hand, from someone walking. With at most 40 units, the Chamber lists the whole event from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Fifteen minutes between the switch and the step-off

Since the parade is that compact, the timing matters more than at a sprawling event. Here's the evening as the Chamber lays it out:

  1. About 4:30 p.m. Road closures start, and parade lineup opens at Bond Park, Columbia and Rogers.
  2. 5:30 p.m. Participants are asked to be in staging by now.
  3. 6:00 p.m. The tree lighting. The Citizen of the Year gives the command to light the tree.
  4. 6:15 p.m. The parade leaves Bond Park and heads downtown along the route on the Chamber's map.
  5. Until about 8:00 p.m. Roads stay closed. Ash Street's closure times depend on when the parade steps off and on what police decide.

The City of Mason's mayoral proclamations index names Douglas J. Klein as the Chamber's 2026 Citizen of the Year. Linda Hughson held the title in 2025. The 6:00 lighting is the moment the Chamber hands to its own honoree.

The 2026 listing doesn't say which tree gets lit or exactly where. For the 23rd edition in 2024, WLNS reported that the tree lighting was on the courthouse lawn. That's the most recent location on record. The Chamber's description has the parade "with its lights all aglow" reaching downtown shortly after the lighting. If you want both moments, stand downtown. The lighting comes first, and the floats arrive within minutes.

Who keeps the lights on

Gestamp Mason and Dart Bank are listed as major sponsors of the 25th edition, and Flying Goat Pottery is also a sponsor. The Chamber thanks the City of Mason and Ingham County for their continued partnership. Viewing is free, and so is entering a unit. The parade costs nothing at either end, and its sponsor list covers a manufacturer, a bank and a small pottery studio.

Registration goes through the Register button on the Chamber listing, and a confirmation email follows. For sponsorship, the Chamber office number is (517) 676-1046. The cap means a slot goes to whoever registers early, and a unit with no lights gets turned away at staging even if it registered.

The downtown the parade reaches this year

A parade that's done by 7:30 leaves the rest of the evening open, and downtown Mason has more to fill it than it did a year ago.

The city's social district opened on June 2, 2026, so this is its first holiday season. WILX covered the launch and described the district as running from the Ingham County Courthouse lawn to Park Street, with each business pouring into its own logo cup. On opening day, WILX listed three participants. The City of Mason's social district page now lists:

  • The Vault Deli & Bestsellers Books & Coffee
  • BAD Brewing Company
  • Los Tres Amigos, Mason

Los Tres Amigos is the new name on the list. The City welcomed it to the district in mid-October. The city's posted hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Drinks have to come from a qualified licensee, go in an approved container and stay inside the district's common area, and cups get tossed before you leave. Those regular daily hours cover the whole parade window. The city also says event organizers can ask City Council for street use and special operating hours, so check whether anything is posted for November 27 before you count on a parade-night variation.

Assembly sits at 402 S. Jefferson St. in the former Risen Breakfast & Bakery space. In May, the Lansing State Journal reported that the owner of Saddleback BBQ was planning the restaurant as a summer opening downtown. Assembly's website now takes table reservations and describes a room of about 55 seats serving burgers, fish and chips, steak frites and drinks. With about 55 seats and a parade crowd downtown, booking ahead on November 27 is the safer plan.

The rest of the season, built to the same scale

The parade is the season's anchor, and the events around it follow its pattern: short windows, fixed locations and mostly free. The calendar starts with citywide trick-or-treat on Saturday, October 31, beginning at 6:00 p.m. After that:

Date Event Where Cost
Sat., Nov. 14, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. CBI Holiday Craft Fair Mason High School cafeteria Proceeds support the school's Community Based Instruction program
Fri., Nov. 27, 6–7:30 p.m. 25th Mason Holiday Lighted Parade and tree lighting Bond Park to downtown Free
Sat., Nov. 28, 9–11 a.m. Breakfast with Santa Mason First United Methodist Church, 201 E. Ash St. $6 suggested donation per person
Thu., Dec. 3, 5:30–8:30 p.m. Holiday Mixer & Taste of Mason Eldorado Golf Course, 3750 W. Howell Rd. $15 Chamber members, $20 non-members
Sat., Dec. 12, 5:30–8:30 p.m. Living Nativity Mason First United Methodist Church, 201 E. Ash St. Free

Breakfast with Santa the next morning picks up where the parade's no-live-Santas rule leaves off. It's also on Ash Street, one of the streets the Chamber names in its closure notice the night before.

The Taste of Mason evening is the Chamber's December mixer. More than 10 local restaurants serve their best dishes and desserts, along with what the Chamber calls a "Shrimp Spectacular." There's also a 50/50 raffle and a live auction run by Sheridan Realty & Auction Co. The listing says that after the online registration deadline, attendees pay at the door.

There's one new stop for parade afternoon that isn't downtown. Casali Winery opened a tasting room inside Cottage Creek Orchard at 2300 Harper Road in September. The Chamber marked it with a ribbon cutting on September 8. According to the Chamber's announcement, the orchard started 13 years ago as a roadside stand selling Honeycrisp apples. It grew into a barn retail store and now pours Michigan whites, reds, sparkling wines and hard ciders with views of the orchard. Late-season hours aren't posted with the announcement. Call (517) 528-6866 or check the Cottage Creek Orchard Facebook page before you plan a stop on November 27.

Some of my favorite projects start with a parade-night walk past a house someone has wondered about for years. If you're thinking about a home near the square or a lot just outside town, I'm glad to talk it through over coffee before the holidays. Reach out to Nicole Giguere and the Giguere Estates team.
